My name is Emelie and I went to Kenya to work for Dandelion in 2011 for ten weeks. Before I left I was really nervous since I had no idea what to expect, especially since this was my first time in Africa! But the moment I arrived I felt completely safe!
When you are working for Dandelion you stay in a beautiful area in the middle of Rift Valley next to Wendo and her family’s house. I had my own room which was great for me!
As a volunteer for Dandelion I spend most of my time with the women groups in the different villages. I also spend a lot of time in different schools talking to the students. In the women groups I talked, discussing, educated and gave information about HIV, entrepreneurship, business and much more. The goal is to empower the women and find a business idea they can work with to improve their economical situation. When I worked at Dandelion me and three other volunteers went to a boarding school for girls once a week talking about a little bit of everything. In kenyan schools the teachers does not talk to the students about relationships or sexuality so the girls had ton of questions for us.
Except for this we did many other things, for example we had a baking class with one women group, we visited a HIV hospital, went to a church and met a priest that took us for a walk with street-children of Nakuru, collected donations from supermarkets to the women groups, and helped out at Dandelion´s office. As a volunteer at Dandelion I also got the opportunity to stay with one of the families in a villages for 3 days. An amazing experience!
On the weekends I had the opportunity to go on adventures since I only work Monday to Friday. For example I went on a safari, traveled to Nairobi, Mombasa and a lot more!
I´m recommending everyone to do a trip like this! It’s a experience for life! /Emelie
