In April 2014, Dandelion Africa started a new project called Girls for Leaders. Girls for Leaders is a project that will run for a year and the purpose is to increase the results in school for girls in marginalized areas. 23 girls from Athinai Primary School were chosen to participate in the project that is supported by Pangea Giving for Global Change. The girls will be given access to internet, literature and one hour supervised time after school every day. The goal with Girls for Leaders is not only to increase their results in school but also to let them participate in trainings and workshops with the purpose to improve their knowledge of subjects such as human rights, advantages and disadvantages of cultural norms (e.g. FGM), female sexuality and relationships. Let it flow, another project of Dandelion Africa, will also be included in Girls for Leaders as they will be given sanitary pads and we will discuss and teach them about menstruation. Girls for leaders is a separatistic program since we will be discussing and talking about sensitive subjects, therefore there will only be women working with Girls for leaders to make them feel safe and secure.
After a year has passed the girls will be responsible for forwarding their knowledge to their classmates, families and other people within their community. By doing this we hope that the importance of girls’ education will be elucidated.
The first week of Girls for Leaders was an introduction week where the girls got to know each other and the staff from Dandelion Africa. The focus for the first week was on team building exercises, to create a bond between the girls and their leaders. This was highly appreciated by the girls. We can see that all the girls that have been chosen to participate in the Girls for Leaders project take pride in and are very happy to be a part of it.
Girls for Leaders: “My education, my future”.
